I don't think you can put anything other than a P-4 or a Celeron into a P-4. The architecture is completely different. The socket should be completely different. Where is the old Chef when you need him? Watch this thread. I bet the Chef will arrive soon enough. He would be able to answer this question.

Hi Kiwi.
let me understand well... you want to put an intel core 2 duo on your mobo? the gigabyte 915P (GA-81915P-D). right?
well, i think is that not possible.
eneral

http://www.giga-byte.es/products/mb/cpulist/ga-8i915p-d.html
in this page you can find the models of cpu supported by your MoBo. but i can see that your mobo isnt support a Core 2 Duo.
Only P4 and celeron. and one model of P4 Extreme Edition. All Core 2 Duo Cpus appears with the legend N/A = Not supported
(There are some mobos that can be upgraded from bios, but i think is not possible with your mobo. And in this cases i only know about an AMD cpu´s . with socket AM2, but in tomshardware, made the upgrades to the mobos that supose to can support new Phenoms Cpus AM2+, and only a few.... a very few... really works with this upgrade of the bios. And really with Intel i dont know if this is possible.)
So, if you want to change to a Core 2 duo you will need another mobo.
If i could recomend you some mobos for Core 2 Duo. i chose
1st: Asus
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=610&l4=0&model=2225&modelmenu=1
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=610&l4=0&model=2016&modelmenu=1
and this 2 mobos are ready for Core 2 Quad
- Intel® Core™2 Quad / Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo / Pentium® Extreme / Pentium® D / Pentium® 4 Processors
- Supports Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-core CPU
Dual-Channel DDR2 1066
To attain top performance, ASUS engineers have successfully unleashed the true potential of DDR2 memory. While in DDR2 1066 mode, ASUS´s exclusive technology offers a choice of FSB 1333 - providing great performance for 3D graphics and other memory demanding applications.
2nd: MSI

can be a little bit expensive, but they have an excelent quality and supports a new Core 2 quad, so, you can take an advantage here..
Anyway. Hope to be give you a little help here.
:p
See ya.
