D_D and I thought what the hell. I have installed the open source equivalent to Vent on our box. It's a very cool Chat client. The sound quality is amazing. It even has it's own built-in version of TeamSpeakOverlay. Just go to the website located at http://mumble.sourceforge.net/And download the version that suits you. Install it and run it. The first time you fire it up, you will be stepped through a very simple audio set-up wizard. After the wizard completes, It'll bring up another window with tabs labeled Custom Servers and Server Browser. In the custom servers, just put FUN as the label, 66.128.51.238 as the address, 64738 as the port, and then your username. Click ADD and then Connect. The first time it will say that the server has invalid certificate. Just except anyways. Check it out and let me know what you think. I'll be in there for a good portion of the day. The sound quality is awesome and no one gets muttled up from being stepped on by everyone talking at once. Also, there will be a poll here letting us know what you think. If it is liked well enough, it may replace TS.

Nobody even really tried it after 3 days so I shut it down. I'll fire it back up and leave it up through the weekend. It really is an impressive, sweet sounding alternative to Teamspeak. Have a good one.

I'll give it a try at some point in the near future. Still trying to recover from the bronchitis that has been kicking my arse :(. Antibiotics have helped, but energy level is too low to forgo rest for the sake of gaming :D.

I'm up on it, after compiling the client for kubuntu gutsy. Seems pretty cool. I wonder if the crypto will load down the server more than teamspeak when we all get on. Anyone for stress testing it?

If I also remember correctly, 2 people cannot talk at the same time...because only the first one talking will be heard. This can be quite problematic if while in rumble or match, important information needs to be relayed.
Hopefully they have fixed that issue.
D/loaded mumble yesterday, chatted with D_D, was very clear, no hassles, so..... i'll go with whatever the majority likes. :D

That was never the case with Mumble. It's actually quite the opposite. You can't even have 2 people at the same time on TS talking or else the echo kills everyone else involved. Mumble, like Vent, allows 2 people talking at the same time to a certain extent. Even then, the only thing that happens is the quality of the sound begins to lessen instead of over-driving like TS tends to do.:):):)

I think I need to post this just so that it is clear to everyone and noone feels left out of the process. Teamspeak does us just fine. It's a true workhorse that has never let any of us down. I'm trying Mumble out just to show that there are other alternatives. For the [FUN] clan to ditch TS all together and move over to something else would require an all or nothing style vote. The replacement would have to be a step up in every category to convince me to drop TS just to use it. So far, I like what I hear but it is nothing pressing enough to abandon the workhorse that has served us so very well. I hope this clears up any confusion that this experiment may have created. Have a good one.

For some reason, I think it actually uses a touch more bandwidth than TS but it is more configurable than TS. Won't know until you try.

Anyone who has used teamspeak and vent knows how much better vent is. If mumble is anything like vent I would definatly lean towards that. I would use anything to get away from the shitty quality teamspeak provides.

Had a chance to try mumble yesterday evening. Not much of a trial, but I like the audio quality better as far as what I'm hearing from the remote end. It seems a bit more cantankerous as far as initial configuration/setup: lots of knobs to twiddle, and people need to be *really* careful about making sure mumble can distinguish between speech and background noise. That's another way of saying it's easier to get the setup wrong and annoy people with a constantly open microphone.
As far as the built-in overlay capability (ala TeamSpeak Overlay), I'm hoping there's some customization can be done there. The default overlay shows the names of *everyone* on the channel, not just the active speaker(s). Listeners show up as grayish-white, while active speakers show up as bright white. Font size is annoyingly large by default -- it wouldn't take too many users for mumble to start interfering with more useful information on the screen, such as the guy taking potshots at ya :D.

I'm around a lot. NO ONE PLAYS HALO ANYMORE. Wth guys, I'm stuck playing with the JR guys most the time now, or MOD <-- crazy bunch over there. I guess you are all busy training for UT99.

I'm the kind of guy who sticks to things that I'm used to. But Teamspeak does have that lame echo, poor sound quality crap I've been seeing here. Not cool, bra. In any case, I think I'll stick to teamspeak until the majority of FUN members give it up.

I'll stick with TS and what's up oxygen. If you come in TS some time we have lots of Halo being tossed around to new players (like me). Yeah again I choose TS just cuz I havent used that program and i can't download anything so TS{[()]}!

Strongbad, any voice program will have an echo when people are using a desktop mic with their speaker volume turned up high. It's a matter of tweaking the settings until you get it right, or of using a headset. :D ...unless you're thinking of another echo I don't know about?

I think i'm thinking of when I talk when someone else is, and i hear myself through their mic when they talk.
