After reading through the Ubuntu Pocket Guide (http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html) this weekend I decided to have a go with it and last night I installed version 9.04 on a older machine I have laying around.

Installation went just fine and after about 20 minutes I could get going with it. So far, so good and I what I've seen from it so far looks very nice.

When I tried to activite the dekstop visual effects, it asked me to install the driver. So I hit the install button and it started to install. After the installed it prompted that it needed a reboot, so I rebooted. Now here comes trouble: when the ubuntu loading screen has finished and you'd expect to get the login screen: I get nothing but a black screen. After waiting for 15 minutes, nothing changed, so I tried rebooting again, to no effect. So I reinstalled and tried again, but with the same result.

I know we have a few Linux users around these boards, so if anyone has an idea? The card I'm using is Aeolus TI4200 8X-DVC128(N8) (or one very simular to that, will post the exact one tonight). It's a AGP card.

I guess noone has experienced a simular problem? The card is, like I wrote an AOpen Aeolus TI4200 8X-DVC128(N8).

I have experienced this problem. You need to get to the terminal window from the login screen and uninstall the driver or manually configure the xorg.conf using pico or nano to work with the card. It's extremely tedious so your best bet is to go to the ubuntu forums and see if you can find a step-by-step guide to it repairing it. It sounds like your vid card is unsupported so you won't be able to use the eyecandy. Have a good one.

Thanks Sir! I'll be looking into uninstalling the driver and look for other options.

A boiled horse with 3 legs and no ears! hyst

Someone else told me that the videocard shouldn't be the problem, I need to uninstall the driver and see if there's an older version of it that does do the trick...

I have had similar issues. I actually canned the AGP system and went with a PCI-E based system to sort it.

IN the past I have done as Draco has mentioned... stuffing around with Xorg config in Nano. Tedious to be sure, but works.

Unfortunally I don't have a spare PCI-E system laying around ;)

I'll be looking on the ubuntu forums to see if there's any solution that works...
