Howdy folks

Ive come across a laptop that came with Vista home Basic pre-installed but the previous owner has done a clean install with Vista Ultimate (Pirate copy).

It has all the Home Basic info on the bar code sticker underneath it so I was wondering if I download a non cracked Vista Home Basic and gave it a clean install, would I be able to use the info to activate it so its Genuine?

Ive never actually installed a Genuine copy before so this is new to me hyst

That should work. But I don't see why you wouldn't keep the pirated ultimate.

I could hook you up with Vista Black which is basically ultimate under a corporate license. hysthysthysthyst It should work but there may be some issues if the builds are off between the license and the software.

I say just upgrade to Windows 7. It's a much more stable and less resource hog of an OS. I'd say you'd be much better off with that than any Vista.

The guy that wants it off me asap will not touch it unless its got a genuine copy on it Pie.

Thanks for the info, I will format it and give it a go tomorrow. I didnt want to waste my time trying if there was no way it would work lol

Call me lazy, I dont like wasting my effort hyst

Vista discs have all version of Vista on it so if you can get your hands on any copy of Vista and install it you'll be okay.

I'm surprised. But I haven't really done anything with my Vista Ultimate dvd other than just put in the drive and install it. I'll have a look at it :)

Ive downloaded several cracked OEM versions of vista in my time and they have always been from the same person and differents ISO images so I dont think they are all on one disk?

If Im wrong I`ll eat my words but to the best of my knowledge all versions of the Vista OS are on different disks.

Probably, I have a XP home and Pro including SP3 disc downloaded and made a clean install on a computer for a friend of mine. He had a legal key on his computer but no disc (Pre installed on the computer). That worked fine. the only problem I had was that there were some drivers missing, but they are easy to find.

I need to clarify here as even my original post was a little misleading.

It depends on whether or not you have a TRUE OEM disc or a manufacturer's disc.

A TRUE OEM disc is defined as the DVD's with the holographic designs with the word "Genuine and Microsoft" on the edges. These disc contains all versions of Vista in that bit version (i.e, 32-bit or 64-bit). It is the product key that determine what version of Vista the disc will install.

On the other hand if you have a Manufacturer's disc, i.e, Asus. It will only allow you to install the version that Asus sold you and it usually includes drivers for your particular PC.

So long story short... A true OEM version gives you ALL flavors of Vista it's the key that determines what you get.

Is that actually true?

nope :(. If that was possible everyone would buy vista home and installed ultimate.

Ultimate has many extras and features that arent included with vista home. If your computer comes with vista home premium, you can upgrade to vista ultimate from microsoft's website for a small fee..

Also Windows 7 (retail) isnt out, i believe they are releasing it October. Currently you can preorder it for 50% off! WOW. i'll stick with OSX and XP for now ;)
