My girlfriend is like a typical end user - no patience and has no faith in my ability. So when she got a problem with her TFT she got a bit irritated.
It turned out the screen is faulty.
However later one, with a 19" CRT, if the graphics are set at say 1240 x 1024 (or something), it doesn't fit on the screen. You have to scroll around with the mouse in Windows (Desktop doesn't fit).
Okay, put it to 1600 x 1200 - exactly the same thing.
I'm guess graphics drivers have gone tits up, or something else........
I'm off to work in a minute, but any ideas?
Cheers

First thing I'd try is download the latest drivers for the card & operating system you're using. De-install the current drivers and install the new ones...

Wouldnt be a Gforce card would it? You can change those settings in the Nvidia control panel. I had the same issue

Castar is right, If its NVidia then it can be done like he said.

It isn't NVidia, it is some SiS onboard crap. Packard Hell PC.
If you whack the screen res up, the resolution does not change at all.
Makes me wonder if she has a virus or some crap on there.
I'll have a go at fixing it, IF I can stop her whining at me long enough to do so!
I'll let you know how I get on.

Hit it or her with a hammer that might fix it :)

Before any of this happened what res was your graphics set to?
I have a theory for you but I need to know further past history of the graphics and monitor.

Normally this will solve the problem. HP has drivers available on their website for their on-board POS!

Ok, here is what we can do. go to http://www.teamviewer.com and install that program, then give me a sign when you did and provide me the ID and password. I'll take over that system remotely and see what is wrong with it.
I help a lot of people around the globe that way. Did a nice job for Phil again yesterday. hyst hyst hyst His old McAfee was no longer working and he took it of and installed the new one I gave him, but there it went a little bit wrong hyst hyst. I saved him again, must admit it was a weird that McAfee wouldn't install. Old one was still running after uninstall????

McAfee can be a funny bugger - usually ePoAgent running (on a corporate PC).
I have remote view software at work, but when I suggested it, she didn't buy into it.
As for using a hammer on it or her. Hmmm.... I don't like her PC and it is screaming for more disk space, and taking a hammer to her beautiful blond head is a no brainer as we are expecting our first platoon member.
Getting back to Motors question.
Originally her TFT went out of range. There was something on the net saying to change the refresh rate, this fixed that, but ultimately the TFT went on the blink again - supposed to be a known fault.
Initially I had to faff to get the display working with my CRT.
It looks like the screen is 1280 x 1024, but the rest of the desktop is actually 1600 x 1200 (or put another way the screen is 1024 x 768 and the actual desktop is 1280 x 1024), you have to move the mouse from side to side.
Another idea I have (not checked yet) is you can set the defaul res in the registry.
I'm musing if I check that the entries are different and never change regardless what you set in display properties?
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\VIDEO
I have two strings, one for my NVidia, and the other for ??????
I have the settings I have on my NVidia are 1600 x 1200, the other key says 1280 x 1024.
I'll have a look on her PC and see what I can find. She is in bed, so I might get some time to work on it.

I never do. She has a password, but I'd know if she has been on my PC, and she has never bothered. I don't want all the BBC iPlayer crap on my PC.

i have a suggestion..why not spend like 30 bucks and buy a new vid card and just do away with on board vid crap. that way you know its not a harware issue, and you can tweek away!! or even find a real crap card on ebay or something for like 10 bills.

I'm going to chuck a crappy AGP card in to stop her whining at me. I haven't got time to spend faffing to be honest.
