Anyone understand anything about Bots and their coding? Without delving too much I know you can configure Bots in the ini file to be more jumpy etc. I custom name mine to people that piss me off work colleagues etc (shades of going postal!)

It would be nice then to be able to go beyond that and drill a bit further down.

I get fed up when Bots just stand there, if you can see them, and technically they can see you - why don't they shoot at you? Why can they not remember where you were and hunt you down (nice for team games), and why in TDM do they all stand together.

I'm guessing I'm asking a pointless question as someone would have addressed the issue years ago. Just intrigued.

I'm just wondering, if this is on the server or when you're playing a game on your local machine?

On the local machine you can change their skilllevel, Loque can be a pian in godlike...

On the server it's also dependand on the map: some maps (specially the sniper ones) don't have trails in them for the bots to follow, so they'll just stand or move back and forth on the same spot...

That's all I can tell you about it.

You can configure their awareness level. You crank that up and they will definitely notice you sooner and open fire. You crank Loque's awareness up and he'll constantly bitch-slap you senseless in one shot from across the map. All your questions, accept the hunting, can be done in the configuration of the bots. When UT2004 was released, the bots suddenly gained a memory. If you killed a bot with a long range weapon like the sniper rifle, that bastard would spawn in and you were his first priority unless you weren't in line-of-sight and their happened to be another easier target in the vicinity.

You have to remember that this game is 10 years old and the bot support is a large portion of why the game survived in the early days. UT99 was the first ever game with great bot support and, thus, people didn't get bored right away. The bots only sucked people in farther until they got on-line and totally got hooked.

Another interesting fact about the bots: The reason why cheats were so easily created from day-one was that the exact same code used to make Loque so deadly accurate and the bad-ass he is, only required some minor tweaks to be made into an accurate and efficient aim-bot. With the code made so readily available for everyone, there was no guessing needed and the aim-bots flowed freely out to anyone willing to search for them. In the end, what made the game so appealing to the masses also made the cheats much harder to combat.

Very true. Bot pathing is needed for the bots to roam the map. If there isn't any bot paths, they will move to the nearest inventory item and sit on it. In single-player mode when you're configuring the game, you can go to the bot tab and hit the configure button and actually control each little aspect of each bot. You could make Loque Godlike and actually turn his accuracy down or set him low and make him extremely aware and jumpy. I love this game and it's versatility.

It's a double-edged sword. You make the bots to easy and people complain. You make the bots difficult and people complain because they can't win. The bots on the camping server are such a pain because of the instagib rifle. One shot and your ass is hamburger.

It's been so long since I've actually played the bots on the zark server that I haven't noticed. It would seem that with the coming and going of spring break, the traffic has dropped quite a bit and now the bots are on there more often. I'll check it out and possibly make them more efficient. I'd rather see the traffic return but if not, we can make the bots more deadly.

Nice to see I sparked an interesting conversation. It would be nice to perhaps get the Bot paths going - might be nice to fix that bug where the bots just get stuck and walk on the same spot (bot paths not right?), so that might be map specific, and if people use original maps - perhaps if the paths were correct in the first place then there wouldn't be so many maps with sticking bots. Not that I'm knocking people that do maps - way better than I could do.

Certainly if some of the bots were a bit more deadly it would make it more of a challenge, would certainly give Scooter more to do ;)

On a camping map the bot paths aren't really usefull, cause they become more intersting when there are no bots around, when playing online that is ofcourse.

I never did any UnrealEd things, so I couldn't tell you anything about adding bot paths to maps when they're already done. Some of our mappers might be able to help out on that point...

Yeah, bots will do nothing unless botpaths are in a map. They might walk around a little, but they won't fight or anything. That's probably the reason you don't see the bots moving on most of our maps, is because there's no pathing.
