No good player, and I mean "real" good player, is going to tell you that changing a bunch of settings will make you good.. 2 reasons.

1. It's not true.
2. You're not going to get better by someone telling you what to do, it comes with practice.

But, by all means, thanks for the post... alot of people suck because they admit defeat before they play, maybe if people have the false hope that settings will make them good, their confidence will go up, and they will play better.

If changing settings makes any difference on your performance.. well.. it's 2008, get a good computer.

There are a lot of tweeks/hacks/philosophys etc out there. there are two things that will make UT99 play better for you. a proper video render (UT specific opengl or direct3d8) and practice. based off your game style preference the best bet is to find an experienced player to mentor you. nothing is easy nothing will make for a quick fix. most of us have played since the begining of the game release. we all sucked!!!!! practice practice practice. listen and watch others. take dieing in stride and skill will come.

I can see the frustrations at times, early evening EST I will get kicked to crap on the full auto server, but if I nail a few people (if I get 10 frags), I'm happy.

I suppose I have speed issues from time to time (I use Wireless very successfully, my actual speed to the house is not what it should be or what I pay for - but I will be writing to various people and start whining), but I play on other servers, sometimes it is blatantly obvious you are going to get a kicking (cheaters and the like), sometimes it is more even. Coming on FUN Server in the past and other clans (ZARK) the members on there don't just kick your ass (depends on their mood I suppose!), though I don't use Teamspeak fully yet (I will soon), I have had a natter with a few folk, and it is nice to break the ice. But it is fun to play better players and sometimes win.

I have a work colleague who introduced me to UT99, and used to waste me all the time. If I play him on Instagib or Sniping, I come off quite well. He is impressed I have improved, and that is something.

I also play darts (slightly off the topic!). Not the same as UT, but playing darts there are three types of players. The totally gifted (World Champion/County player), the middle of the road, and the average.

I started playing and didn't want to be just average, and I played a lot. I am winning 7 trophies a season in darts leagues, I hit a plateau, but I have gone beyond that and I have a reputation for being a solid player. Nine 180's in a week isn't bad, and being captain of two teams and leading by example and winning the games makes me happy. But again it is as everyone says "Practice, Practice, Practice".

Darts - I mentor new players. There are some cracking players out there that need the encouragement and help to keep the interest going. Darts and other pub games are dying in the UK - sadly to on-line gaming! The star of the future I find in the pub playing well I see potential and a future team mate.

I used to play Super League/County Players and expect to get beat, now I don't worry. Now it is them worrying their form is suffering and I start to turn the screw. If I am playing someone good, I don't get too despondent if I lose - if I didn't lose too badly, that's okay - because there is always next time. And next time you will win.

The only tweak I would like to be seen put in place is to stop that god damn flickering on big maps!!!!! God that is so annoying!!!!!!

Cheers

Tone

Ok, to be serious. To those that are just piping in or viewing this thread for the first time or coming back for more I have one suggestion for you to use in UT.

Disable "Mouse Smoothing" in UT, while doing that Disable "Mouse Acceleration" in Windows. What these do is speed your mouse movements so you do not have to move a lot across your mouse pad. Well, that is great and all but in sniping its not very helpful especially when you look around and start shooting someone and you have to move your mouse a little bit to hit them.

I believe there is a post someplace on these forums that explain this but here it is again.

There are no real "magic bullet" tweaks. The closest thing to a "Magic-bullet" is the mouse smoothing. Nothing else anyone has ever told me helped my game out in the slightest except for that little bit of info. Please make sure that the game is set-up around your machine. If you have a POS computer, run all your video settings at the lowest. Even if you have a beefy computer, run them at the lowest settings anyways. And PYRO, put down the whiskey!!! Another thing, you hear a lot of us talk about these expensive gaming mice. Yes, they are sweet and you can do some cool things to the settings. Now ask yourself this, do you really need one? Is having the top of the line Razor mouse going to make you better. If your current mouse isn't broken than don't waste the money you could use to get a 10th of quart of gas. Or look at it in this view, you just don't buy the top of the line driver because you can put it out there 400 yard because you could be putting 400 yards out of bounds.

Most of us learned on a standard mouse. I started with a standard Microsoft roller mouse, than moved into a Logitech MX500 (used it for 5 years, 3 of those playing just UT99), and now currently I am using a Razor Lachesis (at home) and Death Adder (when I am on the road). The first two are very basic mice, but its how you learn on them. Like most have been saying take some time and practice, ask questions from the vets, and be patient.

Some more food for thought. Keyboards

If you listen a couple of us in TS you will randomly hear something about a certain keyboard. There are keyboards out there for just gaming. Like my last reply to this thread, do you really need it?

There are things you can do the board to customize it for your style. Well, if you just play UT99 you can customize your current qwerty board to your liking.

Personally, I am impartial to keyboards. I have been using a Z-board for the last 4 years (one being the original board insert, until I killed the pads, the other being a Fang). There are kinds of keyboards out there, but if you look at somethings you can do there are some really good stock OEM keyboards.

If I didn't have a Zboard I have a sweet Microsoft keyboard cost was only $15. The response time in this keyboard is amazing and you don't have to bang the keys in order to get them to work.

So remember, when looking at keyboards get something that works for you. You can spend big bucks to get a top of the line keyboard that doesn't work for you or you could spend only a few bucks and have something that is perfect.

As I was corrected on years ago...UT99 is not really the most grafics intensive game...the processor power is actually the more important factor...if there is a factor...a have a mid level ati radeon x1950 (not the best by far) I can tell by the comments who has played for years and who has not...Draco/Ziggy...have it dialed in...no need to do much...

By level of importance:

#1 factor...ping (25 or below & a shitty player = nothing to worry about)
(25 or below & an ace= your going to get your ass handed
to you) under 80 - 90 is preferable anything more and you
have to lead your targets like a half inch...LOL>>>

#2 factor...practice, practice, practice= wife bitching & great game skills...

#3 factor...Tweeks: not too many...take off mouth smoothing/mouse accel
no vsync
no anti alaising
d3d wks for me cause d3d8 leaves a
black square in the recticle...theres a
fix for that but d3d wks fine

MACHine:

regular logitech keyboard /slim line makes it more comfortable or
wrist support

I have a 19" viewsonic monitor 1024 X768 res
Logitech MX580 mouse
dual core with overclocking not really necessary but i do it
any way

JJ's secrets...LOL...he plays with the sound on and in-game
music off...too distracting...he runs itunes and has a pre- set group of music just for fragging... papa roaches don't give a
fuck...some flo ryda crap and a few good old ZZ top songs...he
he...yep I have to close the bedroom door...

Lastly one of the most important factors...he studies players...
he can tell you where SinFive is going to be on most maps...He
knows that Machine plays the floor and strafes the arena at
eye level...he knows the glitches and drop downs and hidden
spots...he knows who's going to go up high and snipe...that
takes time...no quick answers...well enough said...I used to be
able to compete like that but now with the bad eye it is still FUN
to watch...hope this helps ya...Good Luck! BrutalBri

Well, see that's the thing. Everyone has their own in game preferences, my brother likes no gun and a small dot, I prefer seeing the gun and having an X in the screen.

The point to my replies were exactly like what JJ/Bri put as far as standard parts. I will not lead anyone to something that doesn't suit them. Try things if you don't like them try something else until you find what suits you for the game.

Computer tech to play UT isn't that important as to using it properly. some of the best advances in my game have been in implementing new renderers. as of 02-22-2009 there are updated renderers specifically for UT99. check them out. besides practice practice practice and nice brothers buying gaming equipment for your (thanks motor) any computer setup will allow anybody to be super competent. by updating your renderers you can at least see what the rest of us see. custom tweeks and settings will come over time with experimentation. but please at least check these out. HUGE improvements on newer technology.

very recent updates (02222009) to ut specific open gl as well as a d3d8 and d3d9!!!

The bottom line on this thread is that in gaming as in life we are not all equal. If you remember having to climb the rope in gym class, you probably remember that some kids went right up and down like it was easy, some had to struggle but eventually they made it to the top. Sadly some could never make it no matter how hard they tried. The UT community is just a microcosm of society and unfortunately some people can practice untill they are blue in the face and never be as great as some of the players who have posted in this thread. My advice to you newly, is pretty much the same as the others (1) practice, (2) play against better players, (3) listen to other players advice, (4) evaluate yourself and take constructive criticism to help you to identify aspects of your game that you need to work on first, (5) build up your map knowledge, and most of all don't get frustrated because it's only a game. Hey, if it doesn't pan out you can always become a camper! LOL

I've tried the OpenGL patch - can't say I was overly impressed - it is still TOO dark. Direct3D9 - I'm happy with that at the moment. My work colleague says his graphics card appears in UT - mine doesn't?

In terms of practice, from time to time you will see me appear in a map and play for half an hour then disappear (off to work).

People say practice and learn the maps, here is the interesting thing. On the FUN Servers, most maps I play on I have never played on, so if I get a decent score, I'm happy to be honest. You will usually see me looking bemused on most maps either trying to work out who is shooting me, and where from, and where is the best place to hide.

So how do you practice and learn the map?

I have a few methods, being shot from all sides isn't one of them.

In your Cache folder in UT, there is a cache.ini file. This indexes the files that are downloaded (cached) if you don't have the components already in place. It doesn't take a genius to work out if you find the corresponding files and rename them, and put them in the correct folders - textures, maps etc, then you have a copy of the map installed. Next time you don't need to download the map, helps if you clear the Cache down.

Now you have the map, you can play around. In the days before I got on the internet with UT, I twigged if you copy the map files and rename them to DM, AS etc etc, then you have new possibilities.

You can now learn the maps against your own bots, or just wander around on your own, in your own time and discover things. The other way is to load the map into the Unreal Editor and look around.

On some maps - that kitchen one for example I notice players firing Redeemers out of cupboards etc and I'm thinking "Hang on, where did that come from?" Okay I know where from, but how to get there.

Again unless you learn the map, you don't know where things are.

Once I have a handle f where things are, and teleporters etc go, then I'm happier and more confident. The first time I played the Cinema I got a right kicking, later I employed better tactics, I still have not sussed where everything is yet, but maybe next time.

So some of you may see me playing on the Bolt Action server on my own against bots. I'm just practicing.

I do have one grumble though. I usually in a match spawn in the dumbest places. I get whacked, and guess what I spawn in the same place and get whacked. How many times have you appeared in the microwave? To get killed 6 times in a row without firing a shot is demoralising and I can see how new players can get pissed off.

So for other players I can see the frustration.

This leads me on to the next thing. You can't shoot whilst spawning, and you can't shoot spawners. How many times have you been shot dead by someone spawning? If I try it I whilst spawning I die, if I shoot a spawner, depending on the timing, sometimes they die other times I die.

In a one-on-one situation if I spawn I want to know that the guy stood in front of me waiting isn't going to shoot me anyway and I die (AGAIN).

This is a major frustration. Is this a bug (the spawning thing not me getting frustrated).

Anyway I'll finish this message and try and get a quick game in before work.

Here is what I do.

Get the map to play in local mode, then type in the console SHOW ALL, now you see all kind of weird icons appear. The joystick one is the spawnpoint, you can switch between them by typing in the console VIEWCLASS PLAYERSTART, when you repeat that command it will bring you to the next spawnpoint, etc etc. So for the teleporters it is VIEWCLASS TELEPORTER and repeat that for all other teleporters in the map. The other trick is to use the ghost command in the console. then you can fly around and get into buildings. If there are hidden spots or hallways there you can see them. Another trick i use is to find triggers, but you will need the UNREALED to see what they do, VIEWCLASS TRIGGER in the console and retype it for more. VIEWCLASS MOVER for elevators. Look in UNREALED for all the other actor words you can use

To see where you get shot from is using the rifle the way to do it. When they shoot you see where your rifle is on the ground. Now draw a line from your rifle over your (dead) body and keep drawing that line. That is the direction where the shot came from. So mapknowledge is in place here and you can find your opponent

Well, here is the thing with your frustrations with that. You are playing on the camping server. What you are describing is called spawn protection. You are given 8 seconds to get to a spot, use it. If you shoot before then you will die, if someone shoots you before your protection wears off they die.

This isn't a bug. My suggestion is to get to a spot before your protection wears off, than start looking for kills.

I get this on the other server (2 seconds), but sometimes you can't run away fast enough, and it is sometimes a bit like the Ok Coral. I get narked that I always get killed even if I am still spawning.

It's subtle in a good portion of the maps, but try playing a map like WhiteTrashChristmas with it checked and then unchecked. It'll show all it's wonder then and it will even improve your framerate all across the board a tiny bit.

Huh? Can someone post their Open GL settings from their UT.ini?

Thanks

I've played with Open GL, but when I came back to Windows, my screen is too bright (I'm guessing it is because I have UT minimized though?).
