I am loving linux! Here are some screenshots of my eyecandy. It is so highly customizable that it would blow your mind. You don't have to go hunting for pirated software for anything because it already comes with open source knock-offs of everything from PhotoShop to AutoCad. Here are the screenshots.

I've been hooked by the penguin for a while now. started with fedora red hat and now on to ubuntu/kubuntu. the opensource community is HUGE!!! and you are right there is a free version of everything. next you need to experiment witn "wine" and "virtual Box". good times. and you can dual boot to boot. piece of cake. love to see another non conformist.

Hi to everyone.

Damn what a sweet set-up! I've got a lot of work ahead of me to get it looking that sharp. The biggest issue that this thing is giving me now is the dual monitor set-up I run. I just now got Compiz to run on both monitors independently. The problem I had before this was trying to run Teamspeak and UT99 at the same time. It took me days to figure out that the ALSA and teamspeak were incompatible preventing both UT99 and Teamspeak to have sound at the same time. It was either one or the other. I eventually had to ditch ALSA and go completely to OSS4 to get it to work.

Either way, I'm done with Windows unless it is running inside VMware Workstation inside Linux. By the time I'm done with this bitch, it's gonna be all me! hysthysthyst Have a good one.

That looks sweet guys! Very impressive!

Any of you have any good sites for a complete Linux novist who'd like to learn more about it, but has little spare time? I'm thinking about re-installing my old laptop, but haved decided what to run on it. Those cool shots have made me curious!

You can check out more of the distro that we are using here (http://www.ubuntu.com/). I'm using the desktop edition. Ubunta has some of the most extensive support forums I think I have ever seen so finding an answer quickly is quite easy. The only real limitation for running the 3D desktop is that you need a videocard that'll support it. Other than that, it installs very easily. Have a good one.

Hello There.

Hey Brummel you can check this page... www.distrowatch.com (http://www.distrowatch.com)

There you can find the new releases of the linux distros... with an explanation of the new features of the versions And a Top 100 of Distros.

For beggin using linux i can recomend Ubuntu, as Draco said Ubuntu has a lot of information for start. Also the new version 8.04 came with an app called Wubi.. with this one you can install Linux from Windows, and it install like if will be another win app, and you can deleted as well. If you dont want to make partitions and all that stuff, is your best choise.

Perhaps. is a live cd so you can check it without install it.

Recently i find a Distro called Famelix.... and looks great. because visually is 90% equal to windows xp. and have a lot of support like if you were using Windows. You can Check it on this page

http://www.famelix.com.br

Well, and finally like you mention about the graphic cards, is not necesary if you only want to use Linux and begin to learn. But if you want to have fun with compiz you maybe will have some issues, but you can find a lot of guides for install the correct drivers for your model of Graphic Card. And you will find that is fun and easy.

Have a great one.

See you

Hey Draco.... have you downloaded the new plugins for compizfusion. Has a lot of new effects. And well, I didnt try to run teamspeak with UT, i only install and play UT but run a little bit slow. So its not my choise for my lap :(

But i will gone to check about teamspeak on ubuntu and see if i can give you a hand on that. But like you said.... about incompatible... but anyway im gone to try it.

And about dual monitor ..... you want to run ubuntu with 2 monitors? or 2 monitors to run win and linux?....

Do you know Synergy?

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

With this app, you can have your win in one pc and your linux in other. and manage both with the same mouse and keyboard like if you were using a dual monitor .....

Check this....

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Id3GHAruhAk&hl=es&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Id3GHAruhAk&hl=es&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Very cool isnt ? jeje

See you soon Draco.

Thanks for that bit of info. I've updated everything in Linux but I don't think it's the same version that you are talking about. It has a bunch of cool stuff that I'm still trying to figure out but am very happy with. I like tinkering. I was able to get all the sound stuff working correctly. Took days of reading through thousands of post but got it working just how it should. I only have the one computer so that synergy set-up won't work for me. I find the fact that I can access my windows partition in Linux to do me just fine. It's great. My UT does run slow now because of the compiz and all the resources that are being used it by it. My solution will be to reinstall my windows back to Windows 2000 and leave it stripped to a basic operating system to run all my games and only use it for that purpose. I'll be resizing my partition where the linux will hold the majority of the space and windows will only use about 25 gigs. I'm done with windows except for gaming.

I used other one for windows called "deskspace" is not the complete sphere, is a cube like the one of compizfusion. But its really cool too. Note: sometimes has some issues starting.... but... for everyone who wants to have the cube in XP i think is great.

And i upload deskspace and sphere if someone like it and want to try it.

Ok, time to make the change DL'd 8.10 I can't use 8.04 because of existing Nvidia RAID 5 I need to use dmraid. I'm going to keep XP for now and do dualboot that way I can at least somewhat justify all the money I have given Bill Gates over the years. If you plan on gaming in the Linux, I'll need to hook you up with the fix for the sound. If you try to run two programs that need your soundcard, only one will be heard unless you change the sound system from ALSA to OSS4. Good luck. You'll find the install portion very easy. Have a good one.

Yup plenty of drivers but RAID 5 is the issue. Created a linux ext3 partition on the RAID 5 and a swap partition. Now I cant boot into Windows nor will Ubuntu install. Spent 6 hours on this so far. Windows is still there in 1 piece. on E:\ drive humm..... replacing MBR doesnt help, gotta try setting that partition as active maybe thats it joy joy joy..............

Got it.......... Linux will not initially see a pre-configured RAID 5 However the text based alternate install CD will. Man this is tough but I get to learn a ton of stuff I never knew. Much more fun in the long run than just clicking install and waiting.
If the alternate CD gives me trouble I'll just buy the External Raid system I have been wanting, back up windows there and start from scratch. Would have been much easier the RAID wasnt pre-existing.
That box is 1000.00 though by the time I buy the HD's thats gonna put me on the couch for a while............humm, maybe then I can read the instructions in peace. lol

Not sure why I insisted on placing Ubuntu on a preexisting SATA RAID 5 array. Forgot I had a free IDE spot and a brand new 500GB HD. Tried to repartition the 700GB raid down to 500 GB (had only used 450GB or so after cleaning things up) and planed on using the rest for a dual boot with Linux. Thought something was funny when Partition Magic came back with errors AFTER the fact and left no record of what happened. After putting together another box with spare parts, formatting and reinstalling windows, spending 2 days downloading utilities and cracks, burning boot CD after boot CD and trying to recover the partition I was finally able to atleast read the disk and have been copying it for about 6 hours now. 1st try I pulled a few files, UT included, placed that HD in the new box and ran UT. It worked so I'm copying everything to the spare drive. I'll reformat RAID after that copy everything BACK fix the MBR and it should boot. If not I'll reinstall XP, copy saved stuff back over, delete the NEW HD, reformat for Linux and do it like I should have done the first time.....whew!!

Ok Problem was that Windows saw the partition as ALOT larger than it actually was. What happened was I tried to make a 700GB partition with over 500GB of data on it less than 500 GB. Problem is now having a ide drive over 500GB. My sata ports are all full. Thinking about changing the partition ending sectors manually and see what happens.
Now I remember that when one of the drive were degraded a few months ago windows never noticed the 150GB loss until the raid array was full..

Yet another reason for Linux........

Well after learning all there is to know about partitioning, drive structure, and Bart's PE. I gave up....
Reformatted the RAID 5 a few minutes ago. Went back with RAID 5 across 6 150GB Raptor drives and am using 64k striping block this time instead of the 128k. I think it might be faster.
Windows is installing now (actually have my reg key memorized because of this) after updating everything than updating all my hardware drivers, I'll start transfering over saved data from the spare 500GB IDE drive. Then I'll be back.
After that I'll reformat the IDE drive and install Linux from there.
