I need to modify a sniper rifle

Hi guys,

I want to open a u file and modify a sniper rifle to be my own. Any suggestions on what program I need to use to open, compile, whatever, to accomplish this task

I have a programming and scripting background so the scripting shouldn't be an issue once I see what's going on. Working with and learning the editor may, though, so any help is appreciated (steps to save, compile, good links, etc).
