I discovered something last night. There is a setting in UT99 that lets you determine exactly how much RAM your computer will use. The section below is in your UnrealTournament.ini file.

[Engine.GameEngine]
CacheSizeMegs=4
UseSound=True
ServerActors=IpDrv.UdpBeacon
ServerActors=IpServer.UdpServerQuery
ServerActors=IpServer.UdpServerUplink MasterServerAddress=unreal.epicgames.com MasterServerPort=27900
ServerActors=IpServer.UdpServerUplink MasterServerAddress=master0.gamespy.com MasterServerPort=27900
ServerActors=IpServer.UdpServerUplink MasterServerAddress=master.mplayer.com MasterServerPort=27900
ServerActors=UWeb.WebServer
ServerPackages=SoldierSkins
ServerPackages=CommandoSkins
ServerPackages=FCommandoSkins
ServerPackages=SGirlSkins
ServerPackages=BossSkins
ServerPackages=Botpack
ServerPackages=MultiMesh
ServerPackages=Relics
ServerPackages=EpicCustomModels
ServerPackages=TCowMeshSkins
ServerPackages=TNaliMeshSkins
ServerPackages=TSkMSkins
ServerPackages=De

The 'CacheSizeMegs=4' line is what determines how much is going to be cached when the game loads. Default is 4 megs. That isn't much at all. I'll explain what this number means. When your game loads initially, this is how much gets loaded into memory automatically. What gets loaded into memory is readily accessible by the CPU with no waiting. What doesn't get loaded has to be read from the hard-drive on the fly and the CPU basically waits for your hard-drive to thrash out the info before proceeding. Back in the day when this game was released and everyone was using 299Mhz computers, 4 megs was a lot of resources on a computer with only 32megs of RAM. Now, we have computers that have at least 512megs of RAM. My computer has 2gigs or 2000megs. I set this number up to 1400 and my game play has smoothed out tremendously. The video lag that I was having on certain maps is basically gone. On older machines, turning this number up above 256 causes the game to run at hyperspeed and making it unplayable. Most of us run nothing else in the background while playing except teamspeak and teamspeakoverlay so you can set aside alot of RAM for the UnrealTournament process. I would say find out how much RAM your machine has and figure 60% of that. You don't want to go any higher then that. The game will take a few seconds longer to start but the performance improvement will be worth it. Have a good one.

Wellll......that has certainly changed things in my lag induced world, although my ping has not (and won't...... i know) it has certainly improved accuracy and gameplay.
